The Fall of Man, an engraving by Albrecht Durer, 1504, based on the biblical story of Adam and Eve. Using a sharp steel tool called a burin, the artist first incised the outlines of his entire composition on a smooth copper plate. when the plate was inked only the shallow grooves cut by the burin would carry the ink.
