Portrait of Pehriska-Ruhpa, "Two Ravens", principal leader of the Hidatsa Dog Society performing a traditional dance in full costume. His blue headdress is made of magpie and wild turkey feathers. He wears a long cloth mantle over his shoulder, a war whistle and holds a society emblem, of a rattle made of deer hooves or deer claws attached to a beaded stick in his right hand and a bow and arrows in his left hand. In 1836 Maximilian commissioned Bodmer to create illustrations to accompany the text of his atlas documenting their travels.
