Un deuil national. The ship was devastated by a series of explosions within one of its magazines while in dry dock in Toulon. The accident was determined to have been caused by a propellant used in the ammuniton which became unstable with age. The disaster, which caused the loss of 120 lives, caused a political scandal which led to the resignation of the French Naval Minister, Gaston Thomson.
