In 1879, the year this painting was shown at the Royal Academy, La Thangue won the RA?s Gold Medal for Historical Painting with another picture. Armed with 瞿25 prize money and the recommendation of Leighton, the President of the RA, he joined Gerome?s atelier at the ?cole des Beaux- Arts in Paris the following year, and went to Brittany in the early 1880s.
