The head of Austrian counter-intelligence, Redl was in fact a Russian spy who provided the Russians with military secrets including the entire Austrian plan for the invasion of Serbia. He shot himself with a revolver after his treason was unveiled. It has been suggested that Redl\'s activities cost the lives of 500,000 Austro-Hungarian soldiers in the First World War.
