The first aviator to attempt to fly across the English Channel, Latham was reportedly killed by a wounded buffalo while on an expedition to the French Congo. However, a French officer in the region stated that Latham\'s wounds were inconsistent with an attack by a buffalo, and he believed he had in fact been murdered by his porters, possibly in an attempt to steal rifles.
