Since that time it has been assumed that the sitter was Maria Walpole, Dowager Countess Waldegrave (1737-1807), the niece of Horace Walpole, who, after the death of her first husband James, 2nd Earl Waldegrave, married secretly in September 1766 William Henry, Duke of Gloucester, third son of Frederick, Prince of Wales, and brother of George III.
