1213991 Landscape with Castle and Bridge (bodycolour & w/c on card) by Oldfield, John (1789-1863); 28.7 x19.1 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: John Oldfield learnt drawing as a mapmaker in the Trigonometrical Survey Team, working for the military Board of Ordnance. Drawing was a standard part of military training at this time. The style of this scene had become rather old-fashioned by the time it was painted. The view is probably imaginary, and is constructed rather like a stage set. The arching tree and the castle on a rock were standard picture features. The picture is painted in thick opaque watercolour. Oldfield later became a General in the Royal Engineers.); 穢 Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums; British, out of copyright.
