1216216 Roker Terrace and Harbour entrance from Holey Rock (w/c on paper) by Webster, J. (19th-20th century); 41.2x31.8 cm; Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, Tyne & Wear, UK; (add.info.: Roker South Pier was begun in 1885 over a natural outcrop of rock. Huge blocks of up to 56 tonnes were put in place by a 290-tonne hydraulic crane. The pier was completed in 1903 with a lighthouse at the end, and measured approximately 860 metres (2,800 feet). Moveable bathing huts on the beach show how Roker was developing as Sunderland\'s seaside resort.
