Huge blocks of up to 56 tonnes were put in place by a 290-tonne hydraulic crane. The pier was completed in 1903 with a lighthouse at the end, and measured approximately 860 metres (2,800 feet). Moveable bathing huts on the beach show how Roker was developing as Sunderland\'s seaside resort.
