1215488 The Stackyard (w/c, pencil & bodycolour on board) by Mitchell, John Edgar (1871-1922); 47.8x38.1 cm; Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead, Tyne & Wear, UK; (add.info.: The sketchy approach of this composition was a style popular with many watercolour artists in early part of the 20th century. The outlines have been roughly drawn with soft pencil, but the picture has been mostly painted directly with the brush. The blunt end of the brush has been used to scrape through the paint for the stalks of the hayrick on the left. The haystack on the right shows the raised platform used to allow air to circulate, keeping the stack cool. J Edgar Mitchell lived in Newcastle from about 1900.); 穢 Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums; British, out of copyright.
