It was the main home of the Earls of Northumberland from 1332, but later became ruined. The small harbour of Amble can be seen in the distance of this brightly coloured scene. Women and men are cutting corn by hand and stacking it to dry. The spaciousness of the cloudy sky is characteristic of watercolours painted by Harry Sutton Palmer.
