He was Sheriff of Newcastle in 1634 and was knighted in 1639. Marlay\'s Royalist sympathies resulted in his coalmines being confiscated in 1643 during Oliver Cromwell\'s government, and he was later imprisoned. After the return of the monarchy with Charles II, Marlay again became a leading citizen. He was Member of Parliament in 1662/3, and was also Mayor of Newcastle five times.); Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums.
