Drawimg of a dissected scale from the skin of the fish, the sole. The externally visible part of the scale is the fan shaped bit at the bottom; the rest lies under the skin. This figure appeared in a book by Robert Hooke called "Micrographia" in 1665, it contains some of the most beautiful drawings of microscope observations ever made. Hookes comments from this specimen were that "Nature follows its usual method, framing all parts so, its as that they are both useful and ornamental in all composures..." (sic). He was born in England in 1635, his main accomplishments were in the fields of physics, where he studied the action of springs, and in biology.
