Light micrograph showing two small thyroid follicles. In the centre of the follicles, there is the colloid that has undergone a small retraction and appears detached from the epithelium. Clear areas are visible at the edge of the colloid (the classic 'punch' images). They are the so-called reabsorption vacuoles, which were formerly interpreted as proof of the reabsorption of the colloid. Today they are considered artifacts. Thyrocytes appear as simple prismatic epithelium.
