Adrenal medulla, light micrograph. When the adrenal glands are fixed in a fixative containing chromium salts (e.g. potassium dichromate), the cells of the adrenal medulla reduce the chromium salts due to their monoamine content and adopt a brownish yellow colour unlike the cortex which remains colourless. Unstained frozen section.
