869209 Heavy gun in Fort Woodbury, Virginia, 1861 (b/w photo) by American Photographer, (19th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Union artillerymen of the 4th Michigan Volunteers posing with a 24-pounder gun in September 1861 in newly-completed Fort Woodbury, an earthen field-fortification erected atop Arlington Heights, Virginia, to help defend Washington, D. C. This is an older M.1829 gun, mounted atop a front-pintle barbette-carriage; note how three of its seven-man crew are still wearing their infantry gaiters, while two also have on tasseled ?Canada hats? or ?Canada caps,? a brimless headgear of French origin which was unique to Michigan. This image has been enhanced by combining its original stereographic pair of wet-collodion glass negatives into a single extra-wide modern photograph, as well as being cleaned and repaired); Battlefields in Motion, Ltd.; American, out of copyright.
