473879 The Building of the New Castle (b/c, pencil & w/c on paper) by Scott, William Bell (1811-90); 39.1x25.8 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: The first castle at Newcastle was built in 1080 for Robert Curthose, eldest son of William the Conqueror. He is apparently shown in this picture, wearing a crown and holding a crossbow. However, Curthose\'s castle was of wood on an earth mound. It was rebuilt in stone during the reign of Henry II, between 1168 and 1178. The distant view shows the Roman bridge across the Tyne - the Pons Aelis.
