It resulted from one of the many visits he made to Venice in Italy after 1868. The view shows the columns which stand in front of St Mark\'s Cathedral. The square in the picture is filled with a variety of colourful characters, including two finely dressed ladies, a street seller, and a beggar with a crutch.
