473947 Interior of the Central Station, Newcastle upon Tyne (b/c, pencil & w/c on paper) by Dobson, John (1787-1865); 46.8x26.8 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: The Newcastle architect John Dobson designed revolutionary curved metal frames to hold the huge glass roof of Central Station. The iron was passed between bevelled rollers to achieve the curve. This was considerably cheaper than cutting the shapes from flat plates of iron. The technique was later used for Paddington Station, London. This watercolour view is by John Dobson himself, with figures by his friend John Wilson Carmichael. The station opened in 1850. ); 穢 Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums; British, out of copyright.
