474149 The Rising Moon (b/c, pencil & w/c on paper) by Palmer, Samuel (1805-81); 42.8x18.9 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: Samuel Palmer\'s romantic vision of the countryside is expressed in this important w/c. The girl\'s long flowing robes suggest timelessness while her huge sheaf of corn indicates the fruitfulness of nature. The rising moon illuminates the sky, whilst the landscape and village are bathed in the last golden light from the setting sun. Thick paint creates jewel-like blobs of colour. The blue sea and the style of buildings suggest that the picture was inspired by sketches that Palmer made on his long honeymoon trip to Italy in 1837-39. ); 穢 Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums; English, out of copyright.
