Gillis (1808-1892); 91.5x61 cm; Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens, Tyne & Wear, UK; (add.info.: Tommy Sanderson (1808-1892) was an eccentric Sunderland umbrella-mender, poet and musician. He lived in an iron hut on wheels, which he called his \'Metal Hall\'. He was evicted by the Council from his pitch near Borough Road, and left Sunderland. He eventually returned to become (the last) Bellman and Town Crier until his death. Donnison School for poor girls and Holy Trinity Parish Church are behind him in this scene. The artist J Gillis Brown was a Sunderland Baths Superintendent who painted in his spare time;); 穢 Sunderland Museums ; British, out of copyright.
