TW426985 The Bard, c.1817 (oil on canvas) by Martin, John (1789-1854); 215.5x157 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: \'The Bard\' illustrates Thomas Gray\'s poem of the same title. This describes the story of the destruction of the Welsh bards by Edward I in the 13th century. The last surviving Welsh bard is shown cursing the English troops below, before plunging to his death. The enormous army is dwarfed by the awe-inspiring scale of the mountains. This was a feature of the Sublime landscape style of this period. The castle was based on illustrations of Harlech in Wales, but the landscape was probably based on images of the Alps;); 穢 Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums; English, out of copyright.
