They are wandering through the bleak landscape of the newly formed earth. This is the second version of this subject that John Martin painted. It was produced whilst he was working on his mezzotint illustrations to John Milton\'s long poem, \'Paradise Lost\' (1667). This retold in poetry the Biblical story of the beginning of the world.
