He designed Central Station (opened 1850) and many of the buildings along the east side of Grey Street. He also designed country houses in Northumbria. Dobson also painted many watercolours of his designs. He was friendly with William Dixon, who probably painted this portrait. The two men worked together on a painted stage backdrop for the theatre at Newcastle.
