In 1794 he opened a shop as a fruit, portrait, house and sign painter. He was also a drawing teacher. However, he preferred to spend his time on scientific researches into plants and rocks. He was friendly with many of the other Newcastle painters. These included Henry Perlee Parker, who painted this little portrait.
