PER267217 Wallace Fountain, 1872 (engraving) by French School; Bibliotheque Historique de la Ville de Paris, Paris, France; (add.info.: Public drinking fountains, known as Fontaines Wallace were given to the city of Paris by Sir Richard Wallace (1818-90) a British philanthropist, who was a great benefactor of the people of Paris during the war of 1870 and the Commune; Wallace made the preliminary sketches for the design of the fountains but the sculptor, Charles-Auguste Lebourg (1829-1906) was responsible for the finished work and the fountains with caryatids; the inspiration for these iron fountains was the Fontaine des Innocents; installation began in 1872;); French, out of copyright.
