BAL106941 Portrait of Peregrine Bertie, 13th Baron Willoughby de Eresby (1555-1601) (oil on panel) by English School, (17th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: battle between States General of Holland and English Government; Peregrine Bertie, 13th Baron Willoughby de Eresby (12 October 1555 ??25 June 1601) was the son of Catherine Willoughby, 12th Baroness Willoughby de Eresby, and Richard Bertie, her second husband. Born 12 October 1555 in Germany but family returned to England on Elizabeth\'s accession to the throne. From March 1586 Bertie served in the Netherlands as governor of Bergen-op-Zoom under Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester, who was Governor-General of the United Provinces. In December 1586, he was made general of the English forces. He suffered a major defeat at the Battle of Zutphen but redeemed himself with his victory at the Siege of Bergen. Subsequently, he fought for the Huguenots under Henry of Navarre. He commanded the English contingent at Henry\'s Siege of Paris in 1590); English, out of copyright.
