Herbert Eugene Ives (1882-1953), US engineer and physicist. Ives worked on early facsimile (fax) and television systems. He worked for the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, demonstrating long-distance television transmission in the 1920s, and pioneering television-telephone (videotelephony) systems in the 1930s. Ives is also known for his work in physics, testing Einstein's special relativity with the Ives-Stilwell experiment of 1938. Intended to disprove special relativity, the experiment confirmed the time dilation effect. Photographed at a National Academy of Sciences meeting in April 1938.
