X-ray (left) and computed tomography (CT) scan (right) of a fractured thoracic vertebra in a 30 year old patient who had a paragliding accident. There is a Chance fracture is in the T12 vertebra. Chance fractures involve all 3 columns of the spine and result from flexion-distraction injuries. They commonly occur at the thoracolumbar junction and often associated with a seat belt injury in car accidents.
