Comparative light micrographs of cancellous bone stained with haematoxylin and eosin (left) and with polarised light (right). With haematoxylin and eosin, the organization of the spongy bone tissue in trabeculae is observed that anastomoses with each other, leaving wide spaces occupied by bone marrow. The constitution of the bone trabeculae by bone lamellae is revealed by polarised light, where the alternation of bright lines with dark bands is seen, due to the different orientation of the collagen microfibrils in each bone lamella.
