Frontispiece of Galileo Galilei's 1632 book Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems showing from left to right: Greek philosopher Aristotle (384-322 BC), Greek philosopher Ptolemy (100-170 AD) and Polish astronomer Copernicus (1473-1543). Ptolemy had a geocentric view of the universe, stating that all celestial bodies orbited the Earth. However, Galileo agreed with the newer Copernican system, that the Earth orbited the Sun, which led to his trial for heresy. As this was the view of the Catholic church, Galileo was placed under house arrest by the pope.
