Ferdinand von Richthofen, German geologist. Ferdinand travelled around the world for 12 years, carrying out geological surveys of the areas he visited. He was the first person to study the geology of China. On his return to Germany, von Richthofen worked at three universities, specialising in physical geography. He was also concerned with the organisation and teaching of geography as a whole. Engraving from 1869.
