Allied invasion of Sicily in World War II, 1943. Manuscript planning map for the Allied landing near Licata, Sicily, on 10 July 1943. Codenamed Operation Husky, this series of landings on Sicily initiated the Italian Campaign and triggered the collapse of Italy as a combatant nation in the war. Landings on Sicily were made in the early hours of 10 July on 26 main beaches along 169 kilometres of the southern and eastern coasts of the island.
