Alchemists at work, 16th-century illustration. Alchemists experimented with a range of materials, including metals and minerals, using furnaces and distillation equipment, and consulting manuscripts such as the one at right. A religious hospital is shown in the background through a window. This illustration, dating from around 1558, is attributed to the Flemish artist Philip Galle after Pieter Bruegel the Elder.
