Kirschner wires in shoulder fracture surgery, illustration. Kirschner wires, also called K-wires, are sterilized, sharpened, smooth stainless steel pins used in orthopaedics (joint surgery). Here, two examples are shown with them inserted into the fractured head of a humerus (upper arm bone) to hold the fragments together as the bone heals.
