Apollo 15 lunar surface exploration, August 1971. This photograph was taken during the Apollo 15 third lunar surface extravehicular activity (EVA-3). It shows the view to the south down Hadley Rille from Station 9A. Both the eastern and western sides of the rille are shown. Hadley Delta is the mountain in the background, and St George Crater is partially visible at upper right. The boulders in the foreground are basalts from the units that crop out along the rille. Apollo 15 was the fourth manned mission to land on the Moon. The lunar lander 'Falcon' touched down in the Hadley region of the Moon on 30 July 1971. Astronauts David Scott and James Irwin spent a total of 18.5 hours outside their spacecraft, carrying out three exploration trips (EVAs) with the Lunar Roving Vehicle (used for the first time on this mission). Photographed by Irwin on 2 August 1971.
