Ferrante Gonzaga (1507-1557), Italian military commander and prince of Guastalla. The House of Gonzaga ruled in Mantua in northern Italy from 1328 to 1708. Ferrante Gonzaga was sent to the court of Spain, where he served the future Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Gonzaga took part in the Sack of Rome (1527). When Charles ascended to the throne, Gonzaga was appointed commander-in-chief of the Imperial army in Italy. Wars and battles in which he fought included the Conquest of Tunis (1535), the Algiers expedition (1541), the Italian War of 1542-1546, and the War of Parma (1551). He died in a fall from a horse at the Battle of St Quentin (1557). Original artwork from Venice in 1569. Artwork published in 1895.
