Antarctic ice sheet activity, 2014-2018. Map of Antarctica, showing the speed at which glaciers are melting and flowing outwards into the sea. The speed (velocity) in metres per year is colour-coded, with the key at lower left. The blue areas are relatively slow flows, with the red areas showing the fastest flows of glacial ice. Produced in 2018, from analysis of satellite images, this image shows the flow rate from December 2013 to December 2018. As well as the known major flows at upper left and lower centre, new areas of increased glacial melting were detected in East Antarctica (lower right). This has major implications for climate change models, as if the East Antarctic ice sheets melt, sea levels could rise many more metres than previously predicted. Data from the NASA project Inter-mission Time Series of Land Ice Velocity and Elevation (ITS_LIVE).
