Side view of the grey or dark dagger moth (Acronicta sp.) resting on a branch in a garden habitat. Both grey and dark dagger moths look identical with only the caterpillars identifying the actual species. The flight period is June to August with a single generation each year. This species is a member of the noctuidae family and is found throughout Europe and the western paleartic ecozone. Photographed in Somerset, UK, in June.
