Scanning electron micrograph of farina glands on a sepal of Primula malacoides. The gland at picture centre shows the short stalk growing from the sepal surface, which terminates in a mass of loose flakes comprised of wax. These have been secreted from fine glandular hairs at the tip of the gland (here, obscured by the secretion). The presence of farina is widespread in primulas, mainly in montane species from cool climates. It is less common in woodland species. The function of the farina is uncertain, but is commonly regarded as a protection against high levels of sunlight. P. malacoides is a native of the Himalaya and south-eastern China. It is a short-lived frost hardy perennial garden plant, suitable for a cool greenhouse or outdoor shade. All parts of the plants are said to be allergenic. Mag x 750 at 10x8
