Nevoid melanoma, light micrograph. Nevoid melanoma is a rare subtype of melanoma that microscopically mimics and is often misdiagnosed as a benign nevus at low magnification. Clinically, it presents as a verrucous lesion or dome-shaped nodule with variable pigmentation. Microscopically, there are sheets or nests of small epithelioid melanocytes that resemble nevus cells infiltrating the dermis. In this light micrograph, note the change in the appearance of tumour cells from superficial aspects (left half) to the deeper aspects of the lesion (right half).
