Mesosaurus hunting Orthacanthus, illustration. The Orthacanthus is an extinct freshwater shark lived 400-225 million years ago in what is now Europe and North America. It was a carnivorous predator that inhabited bays and freshwater swamps. It had a slender body that could reach a length of three metres. Research suggests that Orthacanthus may have eaten their young when food sources where scarce.
