19th century Picture card, showing Vercingetorix surrendering to Julius Caesar, c 46 BC. The Gallic chieftain Vercingetorix (died 46 BC) and was defeated and captured by Julius Caesar (100-44 BC) at Alesia (near Dijon in France). Vercingetorix was taken to Rome, where he was humiliated by being paraded as evidence of Rome's greatness, and was then put to death.
