Sound travels as longitudinal (or compression) waves in air, creating oscillations in pressure, with regions of compression and rarefaction. Sound may also travel as transverse (or shear) waves in solids, and may be converted to an electromagnetic wave. The wavelength is the distance between two compressions in longitudinal waves, or two crests in transverse waves.
