Close-up of an Ichthyosaur snout fossil fragment. Ichthyosaurs (Greek for 'fish lizards') were large marine reptiles that lived from the late Triassic to the early Jurassic period. The Ichthyosaur snout was relatively long compared to the size of the animal and contained many sharp teeth, making it a fearsome predator. It has characteristic 'snaggle teeth', which enabled it to grip prey such as fish and squid. This fossil is from the early Jurassic deposits near the Lower Lias cliffs of Lyme regis, Dorset, UK.
