Ammonium nitrate crystals. Polarised light micrograph of a diffusion limited aggregation (DLA) of ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) crystals. Ammonium nitrate is commonly used as a fertilizer in agriculture, and as an oxidizing agent in explosives. It is a colourless solid. When dissolved in water, it lowers the temperature of the water. When heated, it turns into water and nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. Polarised Light Microscopy. Magnification: x70 when printed 10cm wide.
