Flower arranging, Children playing and two flower-arranging women in a room adjacent to a garden with blooming chrysanthemums. A third woman hangs a sign on which the name 'Hokus?an' is written. Top left and upside down under the entire performance, poems by different poets. This surimono was probably issued on the occasion of the appointment of the poet Hokus?an as a member of the jury of poets, or due to his name being changed. The surimono is folded in half over the middle, so that the poems form the back of the performance. Ry?ry?kyo Shinsai (mentioned on object), Japan, 1800 - 1810, paper, copper powder, colour woodcut, h 410 mm ⊙ w 570 mm.
