Bowen's disease on the skin of a 73 year old woman's ankle. Bowen's disease, also known as pre-invasive squamous cell skin cancer, is a growth confined to the outer layer of skin. It is thought to develop partly as a result of long-term sun exposure and is potentially malignant. The red scaly lesions are removed surgically or destroyed by freezing or cauterisation (heat treatment).
