Illustration of a tetraquark, whose discovery by the Large Hadron Collider beauty (LHCb) experiment at Cern, the European particle physics laboratory, was announced in July 2020. The particle is a four charm hadron made up of two charm quarks and two charm antiquarks. It is the first particle to be discovered that is made up of four heavy quarks of the same type. The discovery will be used to test models of quantum chromodynamics, the theory of strong interactions, and give insight into the nature of ordinary matter particles, such as neutron and protons.
