Desmosome (also known as macula adherens) between two cells, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Desmosomes are intercellular junctions that provide strong adhesion between cells and their role is to bind adjacent cells together. Desmosomes have intermediate filaments that help anchor the junction.
